The Premier League season is now underway, and it's that time of the week where we grade each club on their performance in the transfer market this summer.
It's already been a busy summer, with transfer records falling as a result of the vast income available to clubs from the new TV deals that come into effect for the coming season.
But which clubs have been working hard and who have been slacking off? Here we look at each team's business so far, and give them a grade.

This is getting ridiculous. Having boasted of a transfer war-chest to rival Europe’s biggest clubs, Arsene Wenger’s refusal to pay top dollar for top players has left Arsenal without a single senior transfer all summer. They were gazumped for Gonzalo Higuain, Luiz Gustavo and Bernardo by the likes of Napoli, Wolfsburg and Shakhtar Donetsk, have conceded defeat on Luis Suarez and – having refused to meet asking prices earlier in the summer – are now expected to panic-buy in the final week of the window. Throw in defensive injuries and suspensions, a kamikaze goalkeeper and yet another fitness blow for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and it would not be over dramatic to call the 3-1 home defeat to Aston Villa a crisis point.

Paul Lambert pulled off a masterstroke to keep Christian Benteke and his goals should keep them clear of trouble in this campaign. Jores Okore will help install some resilience which should mean the Villans avoid embarrassing cup defeats to lower league opposition while the club have also recruited a number of promising young talents, such as bounding left-back Antonio Luna, who scored the third goal in the shock 3-1 win at Arsenal. Most of Lambert’s signings will take time to adjust to the English style but his young squad have a year’s Premier League experience behind them which will be crucial in their bid for a smoother campaign. Villa get an upgrade because, at first glance, their signings appear to have been shrewd.

Cardiff City

Their first matches were always going to be difficult, so it’s hard to take too much from the opening-day defeat to West Ham. Cardiff are confidently building a side capable of staying in the Premier League after securing promising Danish striker Andreas Cornelius and England international defender Stephen Caulker, as well as completing the eye-catching signing of Chile international Gary Medel from Sevilla. All three arrived as club record signings - and don't rule out further arrivals.

Chelsea continue their public pursuit of Wayne Rooney but, as it stands, Manchester United aren’t budging, and the indications are that he will be staying at Old Trafford. With Fernando Torres and Demba Ba misfiring last season a new striker would be welcome at Stamford Bridge although the Blues do welcome back Romelu Lukaku after his impressive loan spell at West Brom. If the Blues can secure Rooney they have every chance of wrestling the title out of Manchester, while the additions of Schurrle and Van Ginkel look astute.

Ian Holloway’s Blackpool set the Premier League alight during their brief stint competing against England’s elite and a similar attacking philosophy can be anticipated this time around. Dwight Gayle’s goals almost kept Peterborough United in the Championship last season and the striker looks an exciting prospect ahead of the new campaign, while Marouane Chamakh adds top-flight experience having signed from Arsenal. Spanish midfielder Jose Campana is another to watch but you just sense Palace are doomed unless they shore up their backline before the end of August. An opening-day defeat to Tottenham was spirited enough, but defensively shaky.

Roberto Martinez’s Everton are a bit of unknown ahead of the new season. The Spaniard has shipped in three players from old club Wigan but Everton fans will be acutely aware that these players were embroiled in an unsuccessful relegation battle last season. Kone is a decent addition after impressing with the Latics whilst on-loan wide man Gerard Deulofeu can cause havoc in opposition defences. Much will hinge on whether Marouane Fellaini and Leighton Baines stay at the club, and how they are replaced if sold.

Fulham’s swoop for experienced England internationals Darren Bent and Scott Parker gives them balance in positions where they looked light. Bent will play off Dimitar Berbatov and – for the first time in some years – Fulham have a natural goal-scorer in their attack. Parker, meanwhile, brings some much-needed fight and leadership to the squad, meaning Fulham are a left-back short of a solid side. Maarten Stekelenburg will provide stability after Mark Schwarzer departed for Chelsea and experienced Venezuelan centre-back Fernando Amorebieta will create competition in the West London club’s backline.

Tom Huddlestone is a fine passer of the ball and a strong presence in midfield, which adds some much-needed quality to Hull’s midfield. Danny Graham’s goals, meanwhile, can propel Hull to Premier League survival. He has a point to prove after struggling at Sunderland but has demonstrated his knack of finding the net with Swansea. George Boyd deserves his chance in the top flight after consistent performances in the Championship whilst Curtis Davies returns intent on reigniting his career after failing to live up to expectations from his youth days. Maynor Figueroa is another useful acquisition but it still looks to be a tough ask for the Tigers to beat the drop, even if they do get hold of Kevin Doyle.

Liverpool dealings will all come down to whether they can keep Luis Suarez and get him performing. Mignolet and Toure look like they could be superb additions at the back while Aspas comes in to help lift the weight of responsibility on the Uruguayan’s shoulders in attack. The loan of Cissokho gives Liverpool stability at the back at a good price, while Mignolet should have overcome his nerves after a miraculous penalty double-save earned his side a win against Stoke. Liverpool have also successfully shed some dead weight, recouping fees for the likes of Carroll, Downing and Shelvey but have missed out on some of their bigger targets such as Willian and Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

Unsurprisingly Manchester City have dipped into the transfer market once more, bringing in four high-profile signings, and getting their business done early. Jesus Navas offers something completely different to City’s usual suspects in midfield and can change a match either while starting or from the bench if Manuel Pellegrini decides he doesn’t merit a starting spot. Stevan Jovetic and Alvaro Negredo are classy forwards and City will have some of the best firepower in England, as Newcastle found out. City still need a new defender though and Pepe would be handy if they can prise him from Real Madrid.

Manchester United have made almost as big a pig’s ear of this window as Arsenal, with their pointless public chase for Cesc Fabregas and strangely low (and public) offer for Marouane Fellaini and Leighton Baines hardly endearing them to David Moyes’s former employers. A world-class central midfielder and a long-term solution for left-back are the priorities but, to be honest, they’re polishing a gem – it’s the same squad that won the title, and the young players can only get better.

Newcastle

After signing Loic Remy, Newcastle’s main task is hanging on to their best players but that is starting to look like a tough ask. Arsenal’s interest in Yohan ‘Kebab’ Cabaye is unsettling to say the least, but with Joe Kinnear recently spotted at Nice airport following a scouting trip, expect some more quality from the south of France to wing its way to Tyneside. You can’t really learn much from a 4-0 loss to Manchester City, but Newcastle could have a sticky season as Alan Pardew continues to be undermined by the board.

After narrowly avoiding relegation last season, the Canaries have invested superbly in the summer and can now set their sights on breaking into the top half. Their attack looked blunt for much of 2012/13 but Van Wolfswinkel, Hooper, Elmander (pictured) and Redmond should alleviate those problems this time around. Fer is perhaps Chris Hughton’s best signing as he will add a physical presence to the Norwich midfield.

Southampton have sealed another major coup in the signing of Italy striker Pablo Osvaldo from Roma (pictured). They will be a real force going forward, and having already bought Dejan Lovren and Victor Wanyama, have plenty of steel to back it up. Things are looking good under Mauricio Pochettino.

Will Stoke City change their style under Mark Hughes? Their first match saw them come agonisingly close to a fine draw at Liverpool, with Jon Walters missing a late penalty, and Asmir Begovic brilliant in goal.

Paulo Di Canio has lived up to his unpredictability with a host of unfamiliar signings from across Europe. Sunderland’s fortunes will depend on how quickly they settle in after enduring a difficult 2012/13 season but with a charismatic leader, and Stephane Sessegnon looking lively in preseason, it’s not inconceivable that they could push for a top 10 finish. The signing of Juventus midfielder Emanuele Giaccherini looks very impressive and Trabzonspor's Ondrej Celustka bolstered the defence this week. The defeat to Fulham was a smash-and-grab, so expect better results to come.

Swansea City

Jonjo Shelvey will be keen to make a name for himself after struggling to get game time at Liverpool and Jordi Amat will help shore things up at the back.

The likely exit of Gareth Bale to Real Madrid casts a shadow over all Tottenham's preparations for the new season but Andre Villas-Boas and Daniel Levy have been hard at work, breaking the club's transfer record twice to sign Paulinho and then Soldado, while France defensive midfielder Etienne Capoue is the latest addition from Toulouse. Further names can be expected should Bale complete his £93m move to the Bernabeu, with Brazil star Willian on the brink of a switch and several other big names on their way.

West Brom had a fine season under Steve Clarke last season and the further additions of PSG defender Diego Lugano and Udinese striker Matej Vydra bode well for the coming campaign but replacing Romelu Lukaku is a tough ask.

Capturing Andy Carroll for £15m looks an astute piece of business from Sam Allardyce given it is rare for West Ham to sign active England internationals, and Stewart Downing joined for a cut-price £6m to reunite two former Liverpool team-mates. If Carroll stays injury-free then he should score plenty of goals for the London side. Razvan Rat has plenty of experience but the Hammers will be hoping to do some more business before the summer is out.
